Built by neighbors, for neighbors
mupla began in a living room. A group of families wanted their children to grow up knowing their neighbors, and they wanted to be the kind of community that shows up when someone is in need. What started as a weekly Qur'an circle and a shared iftar has grown into a year-round foundation serving more than a thousand neighbors each year.
We are still that same group of families, just with more chairs at the table. Everything we do is rooted in the relationships we've built, person to person, name to name, trust to trust.
A place to belong
mupla is more than a list of programs. It is a place, a pattern of showing up, and a network of relationships that grew up alongside the foundation itself. When you come through our doors for the first time, you will probably be met by a volunteer who has been here for years. That is on purpose.
We believe in the long, slow work of being a community. It is not always visible, and it is rarely fast. But the people we serve are looking for exactly that, and the volunteers who show up are looking for exactly that.
What we believe
We believe faith is best lived in the company of others. The Qur'an calls us to enjoin the good and forbid the wrong, and the scholars have always understood that this work is communal, not solitary. mupla exists to make that work easier, more organized, and more sustainable.
We are guided by three principles:
- Rooted in tradition. Our work draws from classical Islamic ethics of community, knowledge, and care. We don't invent new obligations; we try to live the ones we already have.
- Open to all. You don't have to look or pray a certain way to be welcome at our iftars, our classes, or our volunteer days. We serve the whole community, and the whole community serves alongside us.
- Accountable to our neighbors. Every program is shaped by the people it serves. We listen first, then we design.
A note on finances
mupla is a registered nonprofit. We publish an annual report covering how every dollar is spent, who our major donors are, and what we accomplished. If you have questions about our finances, we want to hear them, email us anytime.

Our work flows from Islamic ethics of mercy, knowledge, and community. We don't separate what we believe from how we serve.

Every program is shaped by the people it serves. We listen to our neighbors first, and design programs with them, not for them.

We publish what we do, how we spend, and what we learned. Transparency isn't a value we claim, it's a practice we maintain.
